Who We Are

SMEX is a non-profit digital rights organization advocating for and advancing human rights in digital spaces across West Asia and North Africa.

About Us

Over the next three years, SMEX is committed to strengthening digital privacy protections and expanding access to digital security across the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region.

We aim to equip individuals and communities in the WANA region with the tools and knowledge to protect their privacy online, focusing on digital security training and capacity-building.

At the same time, we advocate for stronger legal and policy protections that uphold privacy as a fundamental right. By collaborating with technology developers and partners, we promote access to secure and rights-respecting tools for vulnerable groups.

Our research and awareness campaigns draw attention to the risks posed by weak privacy protections, empowering communities to adopt safer digital practices and demand stronger safeguards, placing privacy at the center of our work.

Units & Programs

Communications and Media Unit

SMEX reports on digital rights and provides critical analysis on issues related to human rights online, internet policy, and ICT infrastructure. We publish timely analyses, research, advocacy pieces, and a monthly newsletter.

We work with a pool of local and regional journalists, researchers, lawyers, and experts to monitor and document violations and developments at the intersection of technology and human rights.

News and topics covered by SMEX include internet shutdowns, freedom of speech and expression online, digital accessibility, mis/disinformation and fake news, extortion, sextortion, and online harassment which target human rights defenders and journalists from the region.

If this resonates with your work, we’d love to hear from you. Learn about how you can write with us.

Policy Unit

The Policy Unit operates at the intersection of law, technology, and human rights, examining how digital systems shape civic space in Lebanon and across the Arab region. We monitor and analyze developments related to content moderation, platform governance, surveillance, cybersecurity, and misinformation, translating these shifts into research, analysis, and policy insights.

The unit works to advance more transparent and rights-respecting digital policies by developing evidence-based recommendations, submitting reports and interventions to international mechanisms, and engaging with governments, technology companies, and global accountability frameworks.

We also document the real-world impact of emerging digital practices, build an open knowledge base on digital rights, and collaborate through regional coalitions to strengthen advocacy efforts and foster informed public debate about the future of the digital space.

Threat Lab

The Threat Lab at SMEX brings together specialized teams working to prevent and respond to digital harm. We provide individuals and organizations with the knowledge and technical tools needed to address digital attacks and threats, and work directly with journalists, activists, and human rights defenders facing online risks.

In addition to rapid response services, the Lab offers advanced digital forensic analysis to help identify, understand, and mitigate digital surveillance and other forms of digital targeting.
